Millions are plagued with major depression but do not respond to conventional antidepressants.
Dissatisfied that so many of patients were not finding relief for major depression, researchers started to look for new treatment options.
In 2006, Dr. Carlos Zarate and colleagues at the National Institute of Mental Health published a groundbreaking article in the Archives of General Psychiatry: A single intravenous dose of ketamine—a commonly used anesthetic —produced robust antidepressant effects in patients with treatment-resistant depression.
Thanks to the work of Dr. Zarate and other researchers, since then thousands of patients with treatment resident depression have benefited from ketamine therapy.
As part of Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign to educate the public about the brain and the promise of brain research, we want to thank Dr. Carlos Zarate and his colleagues or their pioneering research on ketamine therapy for depression.
